Eastern New York Commercial Horticulture2015 NY State Wide Precision Chemical Thinning Training
April 29, 2015
This year we want to educate and help more Western NY growers to be as much stress-free as possible during the chemical thinning season. There will be a training - the last one conducted by Dr. Robinson before his sabbatical leave- at the Agricultural Research Station in Geneva on Wednesday April 29 from 2pm until 4pm (Jordan Hall staff room). One of the main changes to the 2015 protocol will be a simplified fruitlet measuring technique that won't require the individual numbering of fruitlets. The training will be broadcasted via WebEx to the CCE Orleans office (hosted by Liz Tee), to the CCE Clinton office (hosted by Anna Wallis), and at the Hudson Valley Research Lab. (hosted by Dan Donahue).
This season we are starting this educational effort a bit earlier in our region so more growers can consider the use of precision crop load management procedures to improve thinning and reduce the risk of over- or under-thinning. We encourage growers to consider the benefits of this approach (in particular for mature blocks of Gala, Honeycrisp, and Fuji).
