Eastern New York Commercial HorticultureInterested in growing cider apples, but not sure where to start? Join Mike Basedow of Cornell Cooperative Extension's ENYCHP and Ryan McGiver of Scrumpy Ewe Cider for a walk and talk of Ryan's newly planted cider orchard.
Mike will discuss some of the basics of growing apples for cider, including:
- Variety and Rootstock Recommendations
- The importance of site selection and soil preparation
- How to train and prune your trees
- Pest Management Overview, including diseases, insects, wildlife, and weeds
- Q and A
Ryan will also discuss how he is integrating sheep and geese into his production system.
We will then head to Scrumpy Ewe's tasting room for a discussion on cider making and taste profiles. After the meeting, attendees can purchase and sample an optional $8 cider flight tasting from Scrumpy Ewe (must be 21+).
Free event, but $8 for the optional tasting. Space is limited to 20 participants.
